FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
About Waypoint Careers
-
Career counselling provides a supportive and practical space to explore career direction, navigate change and better understand your strengths, values, interests and goals. Sessions are designed to help individuals reflect, clarify options and make informed decisions about work, study and future pathways in a way that feels realistic and personally meaningful.
-
Career advice is often focused on quick recommendations, immediate answers or specific pathways. Career counselling usually involves a broader and more reflective process that considers not only work and study options, but also personal strengths, values, interests, life circumstances, identity and long-term direction.
Rather than simply telling someone what they “should” do, career counselling aims to support individuals in developing greater self-understanding, clarity, confidence and informed decision-making over time. Practical guidance and planning are still important parts of the process, but they are balanced with reflection, exploration and sustainable goal development.
Each person’s career journey is different, and sessions are designed to support people in ways that feel realistic, thoughtful and personally meaningful.
-
Waypoint Careers supports people at many different stages of life and career.
This may include students exploring future pathways, individuals entering the workforce, people considering study options, those navigating career change or transition, returning to work after a break, or anyone seeking greater clarity and confidence about their future direction.
Support is tailored to each person's unique goals, experiences and circumstances.
-
Sessions may help with:
Career direction and planning
Career change and transition
Confidence rebuilding
Resume and job application support
Interview preparation
Study and pathway decisions
Values, strengths and interests exploration
Navigating career uncertainty
Goal setting and action planning
Some people arrive with clear goals, while others simply know that something needs to change or become clearer.
Sessions & Support
-
Sessions are available online and face-to-face depending on individual needs, preferences and location. The aim is to provide a flexible, comfortable and supportive experience that works best for each client’s circumstances.
-
Sessions are conversational, reflective and practical. Together, we may explore career experiences, strengths, interests, values, goals, challenges and future possibilities. Sessions are designed to provide a supportive space for reflection while also helping identify practical next steps, ideas or actions where appropriate. Each session is tailored to the individual rather than following a rigid formula.
-
No formal preparation is required. Some people arrive with clear questions or goals, while others may know they feel uncertain, stuck or ready for change. Prior to the first session, clients will receive some initial forms and information to review and complete, including consent and client agreement details. Beyond this, clients are welcome to bring thoughts, questions, reflections or relevant information if helpful, but sessions are designed to meet people where they are.
-
There is no fixed number of sessions. Some people benefit from one or two focused conversations, while others may prefer ongoing support over a longer period of reflection, planning or transition. The process remains flexible and guided by each individual’s goals, needs and pace

Life circumstances and unexpected situations are understood and respected. -
Confidentiality and professional respect are important parts of the counselling process. Information shared during sessions is treated carefully and respectfully within professional and ethical practice standards. Career Uncertainty Questions
-
Many people begin career counselling feeling uncertain, stuck or unsure about their next direction, and this is a very normal part of career development. Periods of questioning can also create valuable opportunities to learn more about ourselves, the world of work and the kinds of roles, environments and values that feel meaningful to us. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting. Sessions are designed to create space for reflection, curiosity and exploration while gradually building greater clarity, confidence and direction over time.
-
Career uncertainty can feel emotionally and mentally exhausting, particularly during periods of transition, burnout, change or life stress. Many career and life transitions involve periods of uncertainty, questioning and adjustment, even though they can feel isolating at the time. While these experiences can be difficult, they can also create opportunities for greater self-understanding, resilience and new possibilities over time. Sessions provide a calm and supportive space to slow things down, reflect on what is happening and explore manageable next steps without pressure or judgement.
